Langston University Langston University, a land grant historically Black institution of higher learning, will continue its rich tradition of developing leaders from a diverse, multi-cultural student body through excellent teaching, research, community service and public and private sector partnerships.
As Langston University moves from Excellence to Greatness, it will be recognized for providing solutions to problems facing underserved populations in Oklahoma, the nation, and the world. It is the only institution of higher education in the state of Oklahoma with a rural and an urban mission with University Centers in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
It is the only historically black college in the state but also the westernmost historically black college in the United States.
The school was founded in and was known as the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University. Although the Oklahoma State Board of Regents accredited the school in , regional accreditation remained out of reach for nearly twenty years.
The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools denied Langston accreditation until , citing a high student to faculty ratio and a relatively low number of professors with PhDs. In the s student activism prevented the state from closing the school or significantly cutting its funding. At the end of the s Dr. Holloway oversaw a growing endowment, increased enrollment, expanded academic offerings, and the development of extension campuses before retiring in He left a college with nearly four thousand enrolled students roughly half of whom were African American and strong programs in education and health related fields.
