Definite theme emerging here Allan. Where are the boarders? Are they too scared to come and make themselves known here? Or just too busy scraping the ice of the best pistes? My dance skills are even worse than snowboarding, so no-one will have to endure those! Cathy, we found that with the kids too, that after a few lessons on a dry slope and a pretty short time on snow they could get down a simple run and we could all do some skiiing together.
Are snowboarders just more patient beings or is there some other thrill we are missing that makes all the challenges of learning so worth it. As for the dancing, well everything improves with practice. Like you, I learnt with friends. I was working in the Italian Alps and we could just about afford to pay for ski hire and lift passes but definitely not lessons, so we just kind of worked it out ourselves.
Nothing wrong with slow and careful; see more, crash less. And when it comes to boarding never say never Gretta! Perhaps the world needs a few more slow and careful boarders? How could I hate you for wanting to do something fun or try something new. I have only tried very sedate cross-country skiing…. You managed to make cross country sedate? I was all over the place with that too. Skis too thin. Boards too fat, cross country too thin. Two legs, two skis, makes sense. Good luck with your ski season.
I can lend you some funky orange trousers? Not sure how cool or sophisticated they are though. But perhaps on you?? Definitely a skier! However, I tried snowboarding last year in an indoor snow centre and I was useless! And scared. Instructors, so helpful! And stickig your bum out. Lessons in the snow centre could be a good way to learn the basics so you look cool as soon as you hit the snow.
The great thing about having your legs bound in place is that you are less likely to injure them. Snowboarders I know think the idea of being able to move your legs independently is unnatural and ungainly. But the hard part of the learning curve is the beginning in Snowboarding, with Skiing it becomes increasingly difficult as you progress. Totally agree. If you are in it for the short period one week a year , then take up snowboarding which you can learn in 5 days.
If you are serious and want the joys of carving, take up skiing but it could take you 5 years to look like a pro. I love snowboarding and used to do it exclusively, but after one too many injuries, including a knee injury that resulted in my having to get electrical impulses shot down my nerve to ascertain the damage, I decided to try skiing.
It seemed so easy in comparison! Last year I finally sold my soft, comfy snowboard boots and I rent ski boots when we go. As for dancing, well, I just pack a pair of fleece-lined boot and make do. I started skiing when i was 16 switched to snowboard when i was 24 and having kids switched to skiing again. But every skiholiday I take my board with me. When there is fresh snow powder I take the board. The feeling of surfing over the snow can not be found on skis.
I admit with the fat skis it gets close but yes I am on the boarder side. Boarding is a lot more challenging and requires way bigger body movement. Not saying older ppl cant do it but it just takes a lot more flexibility and effort.
The feeling of board and body moving as one gliding across the snow is a divine feeling that skiers trying to achieve but boarders have without trying from day one. I skied for 10 year before I started snowboarding and never looked back. I started skiing at June Mountain, Ca. In those years the vast majority of skis in use, were Head Standard, 2. Snowboarding did not exist and nobody imagined that one day there would be that kind of contraption on the slopes.
I have nothing against snowboarders except that for some strange reason they are always involved in crashes with skiers… They rarerly crash beteween them. I am not a skier of one or two weeks a year, I ski between 90 and days per season in Argentina and then another week in Colorado, by this I mean I have some experience on the snow. Snowboarders have a way of being totally different from the rest!
When they have to stop on a slope, they rarely do it on the side of it, they stop and they throw themselves in the snow, where they are more comfortable, usually in grups of 3 or 4. They enter a run from a convergin side, without ever looking if someone is coming! Skiers also do these things but not often.
Maybe with the passing of the years boarders will mature and stop being a nuisanse on the mountain. I learned snowboarding at age 40, while my kids took skiing lessons. I had skateboarded as a kid, and never skied, so it seemed like the natural thing to do.
After taking a beating for the first three or four lessons, I got a private lesson and all of a sudden I was on the chairlift going down all the blue square runs and having a blast. I bought a Burton board, boots and bindings and took the kids out for days every year until they were in high school. But when stupid losers wander in to our race courses after ignoring conspicuously posted signs that warn that a trail is closed and a race is in progress they deserve to be banned form the mountain.
There would still be areas in business, good ones and we would still ski. I doubt many of the knuckle draggers at our area would venture into the backcountry to hone their lack of skills. Same things could be said about skiers, and especially in terrain parks. I agree people should pay attention to the signs, but this applies for terrain parks as well as race courses. People skiing in wedge to the same damage to snow as unskilled snowboarders.
We are all in it together. Be a role model, make friends with snowboarders on the chair lift. Trust me, with over days on the mountain a year, I have just as many complaints about skiers as I do about boarders. So if i find something that you are not good at in life yet should we ban you from doing it this is a sport its stop its meant to be fun stop be uptight.
You can shove those two rectal stimulators deep into your nether regions. But honestly, I feel bad for skiers because they just feltch the ski resorts then get down on their knees to copy anything snowboarders do. How do you even buy outerwear with dignity? That shit is all an appropriations of snowboard culture. You all look like costco apparel shoppers and its really fucking sad to watch. Most of you guys look like no one taught you what clothes sizes are.
Now, to say there are both crappy skiers and snowboarders is a moot point. We all know that. And though there are always those gapers standing and sitting in the middle of a run, at least most skiers have the sense to stand on the side, or right next to the SLOW signs. According to the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum Hall of Fame, Ski Cooper opened its slopes to snowboarding competitions in , but it took years for fellow ski resorts to follow suit.
Like Alta today, concerns for on-mountain safety drove the motivation for the snowboarding ban. As the level of snowboarding expertise increases, especially with aerial manoeuvres, so does the risk of more serious knee ligament injuries such as ACL rupture. Sure, skiing is similar, but when snowboarding, you are one with the board.
When snowboarding, the adrenaline kicks in, your mind clears, and the only thing on your mind is how amazing your life is at that current moment. You are essentially living in the moment. That is why snowboarding is addicting. The reason skiing is expensive is because you need to buy or rent equipment e.
You also need to travel to the resort, a place to stay and food and beverages for the whole week. At that speed, water is concrete.
At 35 MPH which feels pretty fast on skis , deep powder snow is still a pillow. TLDR; water skiing is harder, at least for me. The most common water skiing injuries are sprains and strains. Legs are injured the most often while water skiing. Cuts are the most common wakeboarding injury. Head and face injuries are the most common for wakeboarders. The important thing is to let the boat do the work.
Trying to stand up too quickly makes things more difficult than they need be. You need to be pretty fit to be a good skier or snowboarder. But to begin with, skiing is a bit more demanding on the legs and thighs, whereas snowboarding tends to need more core strength, as the upper body is more involved with turning and balance. One of the best things about skiing is that it can be taken up almost as easily at 40 or even 50 as at 10 or In fact, a grown-up is likely to do better at first than a youngster.
I don't blame snowboarders for the hate cause I kinda hate the park rat mentality too. You don't "make it" as a skier when or if you get sponsored, you "make it" as a skier when you're having fun doing what you love.
You see, everybody needs a little more pow. Pow is the answer to everything. Skiing pow with a few of your buddies on an untracked blue bird day is one of the best things in this world. Nomatter how "extreme" it is you will have fun just fuckin' around. The park isn't destroying skiing either, its all of the people with the huge egos who think they are better than everyine else. Skiing is for fun. Remember that. YOU get learned! The whole: snowboarders don't like skiers thing stems from back in the early years of snowboarding.
They come around all stoked on their new sport and having fun but skiers won't let them play on their slopes. Eventually some ski areas warm up to the idea, but will only let them on certain trails, usually throwing them into the "snowboard park". Snowboarding pretty much shows skiing what's up and skiing almost dies, yet snowboarders are still treated like punk ass teenagers That's when I got on the scene.
Things were a bit more hostile 10 to 15 years ago then they are now. All this "hatred" between sports these days is simply just teenage angst. Everyone needs an enemy, someone to blame.
All very true. Apr 22 PM 0 0. I ski in quebec, so i find it's mostly skiiers. The snowboarders i do meet tend to have no problem with skiing but sometimes joke around about tall tee's and shit. Which is fine cause i make wise cracks too. But because i live on the border, theres one hill closer to ottawa where all the noobs tend to go I'm a die hard snowboarder since i was 7, im planning on swiching to skiing next season , and i love skiers.
I dont know why the other snowboarders hate on skiers, if it werent for you guys snowboarding wouldnt be around. Because they're jelous. Little kids don't like skiers but when they get older they switch over.
I went from boarding to skiing and I haven't ever regretted it. Pretend you were a boarder sitting on your ass waiting to hit a rail
