The vote will take place during the ceremony, and there are two ways viewers at home can vote: by phone or on the BBC Sport website.

The numbers for each contender will be announced during the show, and will also be available on the Red Button and via the BBC website. Voting is only open to individuals as consumers from the UK, is not available via email, Red Button or by text and must be done before the lines close. The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is a ceremony to honour the greatest British sporting achievements of the year, with the public voting for the winning sportsperson from a shortlist of contenders drawn up by an expert panel.
As well as the main award, the ceremony takes a look back at the year in sport, with other accolades being handed out for Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, Sports Personality Team of the Year Award, and Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year, among others. The BBC will appoint a representative in each of its 12 English Regions plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who will each shortlist no more than 10 nominees for their regional voting panel. Actions which qualify for criteria i - v will be considered primarily on the previous twelve months.
The 12 regional winners from England will be shortlisted to four, and go forward to join the national winners from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the final judging round. Persons shortlisted to receive the regional and national awards may be asked to disclose details of any and all criminal and civil actions pending against them, or served against them plus any unspent convictions. If this is required by the BBC nominees will be asked to sign a consent form at the time of disclosure.
Nominated persons asked for this information must keep the BBC informed of any changes to that disclosed up to the point the winner is announced. This information will be handled in the strictest confidence and, as with all personal information, in accordance with the BBC Privacy Policy. The BBC may undertake background checks of the shortlisted finalists. If this is required by the BBC nominees will be asked to sign a consent form at the time. Information discovered or that may have been disclosed by the entrants themselves will inform the decision as to the selection of the regional winners and overall winner which shall be at the judging panel's sole discretion.
A national judging panel will then meet to select the overall winner from the seven winners, as per section 6 above, and based on the aforementioned criteria in section five, any supporting documentation and a short BBC film about each of them.
It is intended that the panel will consist of representatives from the BBC, leading sports figures and a previous BBC Unsung Hero winner dependent on availability. The judging process will be overseen by an independent verifier. The overall winner will be announced live on BBC One's Sports Personality of the Year programme, currently scheduled on Sunday 20th December and to which the winner and their guest are invited to attend.
The judges' decision as to the winner is final. No correspondence relating to the awards will be entered into. There are no cash alternatives and the award cannot be sold or transferred in any circumstances. Persons nominating and nominees will be deemed to have accepted these rules and agree to be bound by them. Proof of age, identity, eligibility and consent will be requested.

Nominations cannot be made by an individual under the age of Nomination period, nomination forms, and nomination duplication as per Section 1 Paragraphs 3 and 4 above. The BBC will appoint a national voting panel.
There will only be one round of shortlisting, with no regional stage. The shortlisting criteria will be; i The personal sacrifices or commitment made by the nominee.
Nominees will be asked to disclose any details as per Section 1 Paragraph 7. The parent or guardian of nominees will be required to sign a consent form for these checks to be undertaken.
A national judging panel will then meet to select the overall winner based on the aforementioned criteria, any supporting documentation and a short BBC film about each of them.
